A Perfect 5-Day Jordan Itinerary : History, Nature and Culture

The Middle East is home to some of the most beautiful cultures, history and nature and is also considered one of the cradles of civilization. The entire area has a history passed down from the Nabateans, Achaemenids, Sumerians and Romans and is blessed with things that a tourist and adventurous explorer would consider their playground. And one of the best places to see these amazing blends of culture history and nature in the Middle East is Jordan, a country that often passes the eyes and is highly underrated to visit as a tourist. 

Jordan is a country you might have heard of when searching for ancient Roman theaters, desert camping and religious objects. While it has all this importance it’s also home to so much stuff regarding culture, nature and history that would leave you in awe. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan contains amazing cultures like the Bedouins, Arabs, nature in the form of picturesque valleys, coasts and mountains and a history that history buffs would absolutely love. One of the best countries to visit as a tourist, it requires at least some time to fully encompass what importance this gem of a tourist destination holds, whether it’s religious or as a tourist and cultural heritage destination. 

For those new to the country or those wanting to visit Jordan in the near future, we’ve made the perfect Jordan itinerary that lasts for 5 days and has everything you need to know about Jordan, what to visit and for how long, which hotel to stay in Jordan and some Jordan travel tips.

Day 1: Arrival and Amman Tour

Start your tour after your arrival at the Amman International Airport, the country’s premier airport. Check in at your hotel and step outside to really begin your trip.

First drive to visit the Roman Theater and Amman Citadel, two of Amman’s premier destinations and best places to visit in Jordan. Then visit the Jordan Museum, one of the best museums in the country and the King Abdullah I Mosque, a must visit site in Amman. Then see the Roman Temple of Hercules, a site with tons of heritage.

Take a break for some lunch and try to have traditional Jordanian food near the site and rest for one to two hours. Then head on to see the amazing Roman Ruins of Madaba where you can see Byzantine architecture belonging to the 4th Century AD inside the Greek Orthodox Church. After this head back to your hotel in Amman to close out Day 1 of your Jordan itinerary.

 

Day 2: Amman Surroundings Tour 

Start off your day with a traditional Jordanian breakfast at your hotel in Amman then set off to explore the surroundings of Amman with a tour to the three best preserved castles in the desert. Visit the largest and most ornately designed castle constructed during the time of the Umayyad Caliphate in Jordan is Qasr al-Kharaneh also known as Castle of Kharaneh which has a sizable, square stronghold surrounded by walls and round towers on each side.

Then visit the castle of Qusayr Amra, in English it is called the little Palace of Amra and was the residence of the caliphs of the Umayyad Dynasty in the 7th century. It is famous for the bright frescoes decorating the walls and ceilings and two fascinating chambers decorated with eye-catching mosaics. Then visit the third castle of Qasr al-Azraq (Blue Palace) which was  constructed by the Crusaders. It is stunning to look at and is embellished with beautiful black basalt. End your tour here and drive back to your hotel to stay for the night.

 

Day 3: Madaba, Nebo and Dead Sea Tour (West Jordan Tour)

After breakfast on Day 3, start your trip with a visit to the majestic Mt. Nebo, an amazing place to visit in Jordan. You can visit the old monastery and see the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and the vast landscape nearby at this place. Next, head towards the Dead Sea, one of the most famous destinations and seas in the entire world. The salty-Dead Sea has developed into a health spa-like hub due to its unique chemical composition. 

It is said about the Dead Sea that both the famous Queen Cleopatra of Egypt and Sheba of Yemen knew the value of the site and used its mud for medical and beautification purposes. You can take a walk around the Dead Sea coast or swim in the water. Then travel back to the hotel in Amman to stay and end Day 3 of your Jordan itinerary.

 

Day 4: Jerash, Ajloun and Umm-Qais Tour

Start off day 4 with an early breakfast at your hotel in Amman and begin the journey north to Jerash, one of the oldest sites in Jordan that is famous for its Roman heritage. This ancient city is a reflection of the Roman Empire, being one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture, its beauty can be viewed from the colonnaded street, the Oval Plaza, the Nymphaeum, and the Temple of Artemis. 

After visiting Jerash, go on a drive to the Ajloun Castle, built by Izz Al-Din Usama who was one of Sultan Salah-Al-Din‘s generals in the 12th Century. The caste had immense importance in protecting Muslim lands during the Crusader attacks in Jordan and Syria in the 12th century.

Take a complete tour of the old castle then head on towards Umm Qais which was previously known as Gadara in ancient times. Umm Qais is a ruined city which was influenced and inhabited during times by the Greek and Romans, where you can see the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights in all their beauty. Head back to your hotel in Amman to end day 4 in your Jordan itinerary.

 

Day 5: Petra Tour (South Jordan)

Begin Day 5 in your Jordan itinerary with breakfast at your Amman hotel and begin the tour of the ancient city of Petra. The Ancient City of Petra was founded in 312 BC, making it one of the oldest cities discovered to this day in the entire world. According to some scholars it was founded by the ancient Nabateans, a nomadic tribe who settled in the area and laid the foundations of a commercial empire that extended further up to Syria. 

After you reach the ancient city, see the Siq, and the Treasury also known as Al Khazneh. You can also see the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs, and Pharaoh’s Castle. After your trip, head back to the hotel in Amman to end day 5 of your Jordan itinerary.

 

Day 6: Departure (for Traveling) 

Have some breakfast at your hotel and then head to the Amman International Airport to take your flight home.
